If Racism was Treated as a Disease - a poem by Christopher D. Sims

If we are to treat racism
as a disease, as a sickness

then let's get seriousness
about the harm, the damage
it does to the mind, body,
soul

Let's get serious about
what it has done to people;
for people.

If we are to treat racism
as a disease, a sickness

then let's get down to business

about the business of racism;
the lives it has cost; the cost
of Black bodies put up for sale
at the auction block; the cost
of separating and degrading
Black families; the hurt, pain

it continues to maintain.

If we are to treat racism
as a disease, a sickness,
then what if we searched
for a cure, took the DNA
of a racist and put it under
a microscope? What do you
think we would find?

What would it look like
in the heart, in the mind?

How could we treat
a sick person infested
with racism? What if there
was a race to find a vaccine
to clean up racism, hatred,
bigotry?

Just think about
what that would do

for this country!

A cure for racism
would have the ability
To clean up this country's

deadly toxicity!
