The Art of Marketing a Deejay
Deejays, especially well-known or thriving deejays, need a special kind of marketing plan. As I pay attention to local deejays in northern Illinois, I am witnessing how they are promoting themselves on platforms like Facebook to get out there and remain relevant.
Mixcloud, a global music platform for deejays especially, has become a go to website for deejays to showcase their art as music mixers and experts. However, I still see Mixcloud as an underused music platform for local deejays. But if you are more interested in local gigs and a local following, then Mixcloud may need be of interest to you as a deejay.
Deejays are either highly respected for who they are or what they can do or they are considered the person in the back playing the music that crowds of people can enjoy without giving much attention to whose playing or spinning the music. Such is the life of a deejay! However, deejays still control the feelings and vibes of gatherings of people who are looking for a good time or an escape.
Local deejays reaching a global audience are one of a kind. 106.3 - the hip-hop station in Rockford, IL - pays attention to the local market but they are also responsible for what music lovers are enjoying globally. Appealing to both is a balance that makes deejays with that kind of talent more marketable and appealing.
Play on that as a tool when you as a local deejay are hoping to stay local and develop a broader appeal to markets across the world. When deejays can accomplish this they can be wherever they want to be and still have a following and a movement they can rely on for years to come. Promoting this on social media platforms is a great way to define yourself as an on air talent, or as a deejay who is showing up for local gigs.
Sponsorship can develop as well if you are proving yourself as a deejay to local and global markets. To have the backing of a company who specializes in artist development and representation can be empowering. If the station approves to this, especially for entrepreneurial deejays, the sky is the limit and all parties are benefiting and are happy.
Who is taking pictures of you deejaying? Do you have a media team? Where and when is it best to market yourself with photography, videos, etc.? These are the questions a deejay must be able to answer if you are looking to increase your following and fanbase. Today's artists must be multidimensional in order to get farther these days. Deejays must take this under consideration.
And how about the latest technology: are you as a deejay staying on top of he latest technology and tools to stay aware in the world of music mixing? Deejays, local deejays, are good at sharing the tools of the trade. It is a constant education to stay relevant in the music world and use the tools that will you best do your job. Globally known deejays have access to the tools that helps them elevate their game.
Local deejays who I see marketing and promoting themselves on Facebook are striving. Making a name for themselves and staying in the public eye is what they have been good at. The deejaying world is very competitive. If you do not have something unique or special about your talents and skills then other deejays are getting the fame, glory, or the gigs. Stand out!
Marketing is the major force in all we do as public speakers, visual artists, dancers, or deejaying. It is how you choose to market or promote yourself that will get you further and help you create the life you want to live as a talent. Deejays must stay on top of technology, what the people want to hear, and social media marketing. These elements will keep you putting together music for the masses in major ways!
