Considering Darius Lovehall (from Love Jones) A Role Model for Black Men
Darius Lovehall
is a role model
when it comes
to Black love.
The main character
in arguably the best
romantic comedy
ever written and
directed,
manifested a natural connection
with his mate Nina in Love Jones;
is the epitome of what
Black love is meant to be,
pulled off on screen what
Ossie Davis was to Ruby Dee.
I can recall some years back
when Essence Magazine
addressed the existence of
Black love. There was content
in it that was not favorable
to the phenomenon.
Bombs were thrown
in subsequent years
to make us fear that
Black love was dying;
that Black women
and men were not
trying;
that our spirits
were dividing.
Darius Lovehall is
the answer to the doubts,
is the antidote to the
damaging op-eds that led
to the myth.
With Maxwell playing
in a studio apartment's
background, he stood
his ground and showed
Black men how to get down
when it comes to going after
a soul mate
his character alone
did create coffeehouse
open mics all across the States,
and helped Black men evaluate
the potential and the power
of two people of African descent
becoming one.
Maybe, just maybe,
we can be him in our
relationships. Tap into
our inner Darius to
groove with our ladies,
play our favorite songs
for them, be honest
with them about how
we see them in our lives
If we did, we guys
Could have our own
modern day Love Jones
creating peace, solace,
good times in our homes.
